How to Calculate Tile

Formula: Tile area (sq ft) = (width ร— height) รท 144. Tiles = area ร— (1 + waste%) รท tile area. Boxes = ceil(tiles รท tiles per box).

Common Tile Sizes

SizeTiles per 100 sq ft
4ร—4 inch900 tiles
6ร—6 inch400 tiles
12ร—12 inch100 tiles
18ร—18 inch45 tiles
24ร—24 inch25 tiles

Tip: Always buy extra tiles from the same lot (dye lot). Future replacements may not match color. Keep 5-10 leftover tiles for repairs.

How to Calculate Tile for Any Project

Calculating tile correctly prevents costly shortages and ugly dye-lot mismatches. The process is straightforward once you break it into steps: measure the area, choose your tile size, account for waste, and convert to boxes.

  1. Measure the surface. For floors, measure length ร— width in feet. For walls, measure width ร— height and subtract any openings (showers, windows, cabinets). Use our square footage calculator for irregular areas.
  2. Choose tile size. Larger tiles (18ร—18, 24ร—24) mean fewer tiles and faster installation but require a flatter substrate. Smaller tiles (4ร—4, 6ร—6) work better for curved surfaces and intricate patterns.
  3. Calculate tile area. Convert tile dimensions from inches to square feet: (width ร— height) รท 144. A 12ร—12 tile = 1 sq ft; a 6ร—6 tile = 0.25 sq ft.
  4. Add waste. Straight layouts need 10% extra. Diagonal patterns need 15%. Herringbone, Versailles, or small mosaic tiles need 20%. More waste = more cuts and breakage.
  5. Convert to boxes. Divide total tiles by tiles per box (usually 5โ€“20 depending on size) and round up. Never round down โ€” partial boxes are not sold.

Tile Types and Best Uses

TypeBest ForCost per sq ftNotes
CeramicWalls, backsplashes, low-traffic floors$1โ€“$5Affordable, many styles; softer than porcelain
PorcelainFloors, bathrooms, kitchens, outdoors$3โ€“$10Harder, more water-resistant than ceramic
Natural StoneHigh-end floors, fireplaces$5โ€“$25+Marble, travertine, slate; needs sealing
GlassBacksplashes, accents, showers$7โ€“$20Reflective, modern; chips more easily
MosaicShowers, pools, borders$5โ€“$15Small tiles on mesh sheets; high waste
Quarry / CementEntryways, patios$3โ€“$8Unglazed, very durable; needs sealing

Grout and Thinset: How Much Do You Need?

Tile is only half the job. You also need thinset adhesive and grout, and getting the quantities right keeps the project on schedule.

Popular Layout Patterns

The layout pattern affects both waste factor and visual impact. Choose based on your space and skill level.

FAQ

How many 12ร—12 tiles for 100 sq ft?
100 tiles + 10% waste = 110 tiles. At 10/box = 11 boxes.
What waste factor for tile?
10% straight, 15% diagonal, 20% herringbone or small tiles.
How much thinset?
One 50lb bag covers ~80-100 sq ft with 1/4" trowel.
How much grout?
One 25lb bag covers ~100-200 sq ft depending on joint width.
